• Download Slack for free for mobile devices and desktop. Keep up with the conversation with our apps for iOS, Android, Mac, Windows and Linux.
• And more importantly than the room name being invisible in that one spot, I'd be all ears if anyone has any ideas how I can automate this (so the dark theme remains in place even after re-starting the Slack app on my Mac). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Last week we heard that Slack was testing a long-awaited dark mode for its iOS app with beta testers. Now the platform has released an update for both iOS and Android to offer the popular feature to all users.

The fast turn around from the beta testing to a full release for Slack’s dark mode is sure to be a crowd pleaser. As we noted last week, users have been asking for the feature for some time.

Here’s how to turn on dark mode on the latest version of Slack for iOS:

simply tap the three dots in the upper-right corner and choose “Settings.” From there, you a new “Dark Mode” toggle. Simply flip the switch, and the app will instantly revamp itself with a dark interface.

As we previously noted, Slack’s dark mode uses a dark gray shade instead of a true black.

Another exciting tidbit from today’s release is that dark mode will be coming to desktop at some point in the future.

Slack Mac Dark Mode

• Dark Mode can now be switched on (or off) in the Settings menu. Yes, it’s been a long road, but there’s finally dark at the end of the tunnel. NB: This is mobile only for now, with desktop coming later — thank you for both bearing with us, and for continuing to expect more of us.

Bug Fixes

• Fixed: The text welcoming you to Slack the very first time you launched the app didn’t quite fit the screen on smaller devices. Not the biggest problem in the world (literally), but first impressions count.

Notably, Slack recently changed its iOS and Android icons from a dark purple to white. As 9to5Mac’s Zac Hall pointed out, having the option for a dark icon would be great. Additionally, if you want a uniform dark aesthetic on mobile, you’ll need to change your theme via desktop as the sidebar doesn’t automatically change to fully dark.

After a system-wide Dark Mode has been available in macOS for almost a year now, Slack is starting to roll out its own dark mode today for its desktop apps including macOS. The update comes after Slack for iOS gained a dark theme earlier this spring.

Detailed in a blog post, Slack is rolling out its dark mode today for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Dark theme variants are arriving for all of the current Slack themes. Notably, the dark themes extend to the sidebar as well.

Accessibility Product Manager for Slack, George Zamfir noted:

“Dark Mode is an important feature for lots of people,” explains George Zamfir, an accessibility product manager at Slack. “It’s helpful for working at night or in low-light, and we know many need it for accessibility reasons like visual impairments, migraines or other visual disorders.”

No doubt many users will be excited to have Slack match the rest of their dark theme-enabled apps.

One downside, the new Slack desktop app dark themes don’t respect the macOS system-wide Dark Mode setting. But the company says that will be coming at some point soon.

In the near future, you’ll be able to set Slack to comply with whatever you have set up on your computer already, by clicking “sync with OS settings.” We’ll let you know when this is available (it’ll be soon; we just didn’t want a single other thing to delay this launch).

How to use Slack’s macOS dark themes

Look out for an update for Slack’s macOS app today and/or you may need relaunch the app to see the new dark themes.

• To change themes, head to Slack’s Preferences > Sidebar > Theme.
